MARTIN Costello, of UKIP Swindon, gave us his thoughts on the inauguration of Donald Trump today saying:

“America is currently experiencing division not seen since the American Civil War and all for one reason - Donald Trump. The negativity bestowed on him particularly from social media has made him a very unpopular man that one could describe as ‘Marmite’, however I’m yet to meet anyone who can give me a factual reason for their concerns why he would not make a great president.

At a time when the US economy is in such poor shape, having an incredibly successful businessman at the helm is a perfect fit, someone who can make tough decisions to improve the economy, law and order and society. His selected cabinet will be first class, it contains many successful generals and other highly intelligent experienced individuals. A strong US economy will soon have positive repercussions across the pond and we should see our living standards improve. The president elect has made the pledge that Britain will be at the ‘front of the queue’ quashing any fears after Obama claimed we would be at the back if Brexit was implemented.

President Trump will need to counter the rise of the Chinese Yuan as it competes with the Dollar to become the World Reserve Currency and keep a dialogue going with Vladimir Putin to maintain East-West stability.

Too much has been made of comments the Donald has made in the past, many great leaders have had skeleton’s in theirs cupboards, such as Churchill who despite his heavy drinking achieved great things. People seem to forget that what really matters is who can do the best job. I’m sure everyone who reads this article has said or done things in the past they regret, we are only human just like Donald, after all he was not elected to be the pope.

We saw the establishment at work desperately smearing Trump's name and using false opinion polls stating Clinton was far ahead. Trumps promise to ‘drain the swamp’ will ensure that only those with their hearts in the right place will be in government. The establishment, elitist career politicians' days are numbered which is a positive thing for democracy. They have had it their way for too long and the world desperately needs change to make it a more fair and harmonious place for her inhabitants.

We seem to be in another Cold War with Russia so the mutual respect that Putin and Trump have shown is highly encouraging for world peace, the West must stop poking the bear. Putin is making great efforts to eradicate ISIS, we should be supporting him, in this he is our friend not our enemy.

Putin may not be perfect but he's not the bogyman he's made out to be; like Trump he wants the best for his country and countrymen and has a backbone that many western leaders lack. There is much to gain through pragmatic talks that will take place between Donald and Vlad in order to thaw the frosty relations.

We learned from Brexit and the Trump presidency that people do have a voice and this highlights the importance of your vote, no matter what side of the fence you are on, it is vital that you put an 'X' in the box. Our ancestors fought and died to give us the chance to do this is so I urge you to please respect that.

To summarise I say to people who are skeptical, I do believe Donald will make America great again, the world a safer place for us and I think he will pleasantly surprise you. To those who voted to remain last June I say give Brexit a chance to succeed, the time for bitterness and division is over, let us now draw a line under that, unite as proud Britons and get behind our country to make the UK a global success, after all we do live in the finest country in the world!

On my way to Trump Tower last year I passed the Dakota Building, where John Lennon was brutally murdered just a few months after my own birth. As I stood there in the warm September sun I recalled the beautiful lyrics from ‘Imagine’ and felt very emotional when I reflected on how little progress the human race has really made since then:

Imagine all the people,
Living life in peace,
You may say I'm a dreamer,
But I'm not the only one,
I hope someday you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.
