POLICE are appealing for information after a shocking video captured a car driving away after knocking a cyclist off his bike on a Swindon road.

The cyclist was riding along Chapel Street in Gorse Hill towards Cirencester Way, just before 4.30am on Wednesday, January 25, when a car which is believed to be a Vauxhall Corsa pulled out of Buller Street, colliding with the cyclist and knocking him off his bike.

The driver did not stop and drove off in the opposite direction, towards Cricklade Road, without even getting out of the car to check on the cyclist.

A harrowing video, recorded on CCTV, captured the moment the hit-and-run happened. It first shows the cyclist slowly making his way down the road.

But, without warning, a car drives out of a side road and collides heavily with the cyclist, knocking him to the ground and causing his bike to topple over onto him.

Without stopping to check if the cyclist is injured, the driver can be seen turning in the opposite direction and quickly driving off, turning the car's headlights off in the process.

Luckily, the cyclist wasn't injured.

Wiltshire Police are investigating the incident and have urged the driver to “consider their conscience” and give themselves up to police.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information they may have PC Jack Newman said: “Luckily the cyclist was unhurt, but this could have ended differently; the male cyclist could have been seriously hurt or even killed.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may have heard or saw what happened or saw a Vauxhall Corsa style car driving in this area at this time - possibly driving erratically.

“Also, if you were the driver of this car - please consider your conscience and come forward.”

A Swindon Bicycle User Group spokesman urged the driver of the car to hand themselves into police.

He said: “We would urge the driver to come forward ASAP.

“They must have known they hit the gentleman.

“We don’t want to get in to a motorist versus cyclist debate, but a cyclist is a person and this person has a family and friends.

“He’s not a 'cyclist', he’s a human; maybe a dad, a brother, a son, an uncle, a cousin and a friend.

“He’s not a piece of road furniture.

“Thankfully, he is making a good recovery and is not too seriously injured, but this could have been much worse.”

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is asked to contact PC Jack Newman on 101 or via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555111, where information can be left anonymously if preferred.
