SNOWDROPS and soup was the order of the day at TWIGS yesterday as the charity invited people to celebrate its 20th anniversary in style.

TWIGS community gardens, located in the Manor Garden Centre, Cheney Manor, is a project designed to help people with mental health problems.

And Sunday’s event saw the unveiling of 10,000 beautiful snowdrops that volunteers had planted around the garden throughout the previous year.

Gardening enthusiast were blown away to see 20 different varieties of snowdrop – one for each year TWIGS has been running – as well as two fabulous snowdrop sculptures.

Guests were also treated to a bowl or two of steaming hot vegetable soup to keep the winter chill at bay and kids came away with some fancy snowdrop bracelets and other trinkets.

Alan Holland, service manager at TWIGS, said: “Hopefully this will become a regular event in our calendar.

“The last couple of months have been all about snowdrops. We have undertaken some lovely craft projects and there are some amazing sculptures on display for people to see.

“We hope to see a couple of hundred people here today, although the weather isn’t great. But it seems to have started snowing, which is rather nice in a way.”

People were encouraged to purchase a few pots of snowdrops in the hope of growing their own beautiful collection.

The gardens are open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday – except Bank Holidays – from 10.30am to 3.30pm. There is a small charge of £2 for adults and children get in for free.
