A SHOCKING video has been shared online that shows a bus mounting the pavement on the wrong side of the road.

The dash-cam footage, taken in Redhouse Way earlier this week, shows two buses coming face to face, with one having to take drastic steps to avoid a disastrous collision.

Thamesdown’s 11 and 15A services are seen coming within inches of scraping each other, and nearby cars, as the drivers try to navigate the impossibly narrow road.

The video was immediately shared on social media and provoked a barrage of comments by residents, most of whom demanded action.

The parking situation in and around Redhouse Way has been a bone of contention for years. But, due to conflicting interests, residents cannot agree on a solution.

Damon Bower, vice chairman of Haydon Wick Parish Council, has long been involved in trying to solve parking issues in the area.

He said: “This is the first time I have seen the bus have to go fully onto the pavement. It is definitely something that should not be happening, though I think the situation will likely get worse.”

Though he didn’t seek to blame Thamesdown for the traffic problems in Redhouse Way, Coun Bower suggested that better communication between the drivers might help.

“It would be better if we didn’t have two buses going head to head in Redhouse Way,” he said. “Some kind of inter-bus communication would be hugely beneficial.”

An accident occurred on Monday in which a parked car was hit by a passing vehicle.

In November, members of Blunsdon St Andrew Parish Council warned that a serious accident in Redhouse Way was inevitable unless steps were taken to address the parking problems.

“Despite many meetings and discussions over the years, Redhouse remains unsafe,” said councillors in a letter to St Andrews ward members.

“The parking issues in the Redhouse area are horrendous and they are only going to get worse unless something is done,” said Coun Andrew James.

“When you drive down Redhouse Way you have to be very careful; weaving through the traffic to try to avoid a collision. The damage to parked cars is inevitable.”

Thamesdown Transport was asked to respond but had not made any comment at the time the Adver went to press.

Following the release of the recent bus footage, North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson said: “Redhouse Way was badly designed thanks to the last Labour government’s limit on parking, which they wrongly thought would force people out of their cars and onto public transport.

“All that has happened is that people have found inappropriate and dangerous alternatives to parking – this is typified in Redhouse Way.

“Ward councillors and I met with the highways team two weeks ago and have asked them to cost up the creation of additional passing points which would directly deal with the bus issue and combat the inappropriate pavement parking.”

Mr Tomlinson stressed his commitment to working with councillors from both parishes.
