YOUNG carers celebrated their achievements at a glittering concert this week.

Held at the Level 3 music venue in the Rolleston Arms the extravaganza was organised by young carer Teri Farthing, 17.

The young carers all donned their finest outfits for the concert which saw musical acts take to the stage for a polished performance followed by dinner at Ask Italian.

More than 60 friends, family members and young carers attended the event which raised a grand total of £127.89, all of which will be donated to Swindon Young Carers.

Teri began caring for her mum Vicki more than a decade ago after a car accident left the doting mum confined to a wheelchair.

She said: “It’s about raising funds and raising awareness of young carers and what they do.

“I feel really proud of how it went, it was such a fun evening and everyone let their hair down which was what it was about.”

Proud parent Andy Charlton came along on the night to support his daughter Maddison, 14.

Maddison is a carer for her mum Paula.

Andy, 42, from Gorse Hill said the night was enjoyed by all.

“They’re all such good friends so it was lovely to see them all together and having fun as children and teenagers should do,” he said.

Maddison even took the stage to belt out some hits from her favourite singers Sam Smith and Jess Glynn.

Andy said “I am very proud of Maddison for doing what she loves and it’s the first time I’ve heard her sing to a live audience.

“These young people have all had to grow up before their time so it was lovely seeing them have time all together enjoying themselves and raising money for a good cause

“All the kids are into music, dance and performing so it was a dream come true for them.”

The concert spectacular came together in a matter of months with Teri hoping it will become an annual event.

“It was such a great event that I hope it is carried on next year because I really enjoyed it,” said Teri.

The St Joseph’s Catholic College student said she was able to juggle her studies and caring responsibilities thanks to the support of her teachers.

“I’m lucky that my teachers are very flexible and will be there when I need them,” she said.

Swindon Young Carers offer youngsters support in the form of regular contact, social groups, time out away from home and short breaks and residential trips.
