THE immediate financial challenges facing the council will be uppermost in the minds of all of the borough’s councillors this evening as we discuss next year’s budget.

The increased demand on our children’s and adults’ services will continue to make life tough for us as a local authority in the years to come, which is why we have such a focus on regenerating our town and growing our economy.

In just three years’ time, we will no longer be dependent on financial support from the Government and will instead be reliant on filling the shortfall through business rates.

Since we want to retain the many splendid businesses that have made Swindon their home and attract new ones, we need to have a vibrant, skilled workforce, which is why today’s Swindon JobFest event at Steam is so important.

JobFest showcases much that is great about Swindon. Fantastic companies and an eager, enthusiastic group of young people who are just beginning their journey into the workplace.

We first organised JobFest two years’ ago and it has already become one of the top careers events aimed at young people in the calendar, with more than 600 people attending last year.

We have had great feedback over the last couple of years from both the young people that attended and the companies that took part.

Today, 65 firms representing a wide range of sectors will advertise the career opportunities available within their organisations.

This year there will be a focus on health and social care with 13 employers and organisations on hand to give advice and information on a career in this highly valuable field.

Our top employers, such as Nationwide, BMW and Honda will be represented again, but I’m delighted to see a number of other businesses taking part for the first time, such as Zircon Software, Praxair and Bloor Homes.

JobFest provides the perfect environment for those looking at their career options to network with employers on the day and it is an ideal forum to pick up career advice and top tips on how to make you stand out from the crowd. It is well worth a visit, and it’s free.

So, if you’re looking for guidance or ideas on potential professional pathways, head down to Steam between 1pm and 6pm today. Who knows where it could lead.
