A MOTORCYCLIST who posted YouTube videos of himself driving his bike dangerously on Swindon roads has narrowly avoided being put behind bars.

Amin Gurung, 24, of Polesdon Avenue, Coate, was charged with dangerous driving after a member of the public reported three videos on YouTube to the police.

Gurung pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before magistrates in Swindon on Wednesday and initially represented himself in the court.

Kate Prince, prosecuting, told the magistrates that Gurung had taken the videos using a GoPro camera attached to his helmet. Each was about 20 minutes long and invited comments from viewers.

After watching the videos, police determined that two showed examples of poor driving but the third showed Gurung riding dangerously while having a good time.

On Great Western Road the speedometer on the bike registered 81mph and on Wotton Bassett Road the video showed Gurung undertaking three cars off a roundabout.

He asked for comment when he was standing up on the bike and not holding on to the handle bars for about 20 seconds, Miss Prince said.

At one point he passed a parked police van and remarked: “Hee Hee he’s on his ******g phone and didn’t even see me!”

When passing by Great Western Hospital he says “Let’s see if we can make it skid,” and on the A346 he is seen to be driving at 61mph towards Marlborough in a 40mph limit.

When interviewed by police he laughed throughout the process, Miss Prince told the court.

Chairman of the bench Christine Smith told Gurung there was a possibility he could go to prison for the offence and asked if he would, therefore, like to be represented by the duty solicitor.

Later in the day, magistrates imposed an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for a year.

He must also pay a £115 victim surcharge and £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service. He was banned from the roads for 15 months.
