AN all singing flashmob surprised shoppers at the Brunel Centre yesterday as the Rock Choir teamed up with Cancer Research UK to encourage people to sign up for this year’s Race for Life.

The charity is urging women of all ages, shapes and sizes to choose their event - Race for Life 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy - and pledge to take part at Lydiard Park on May 20-21.

On Saturday lunchtime, the Rock Choir were on hand to spread the message to shoppers by holding a surprise performance of two songs much to the delight of spectators.

Michelle Leighton, Cancer Research UK’s Swindon event manager said she was overwhelmed by the positive reaction from people and thanked the Brunel Centre for letting them use the space to promote the race.

“It has been quite emotional and the Rock Choir have been so supportive to the Race for Life because they performed last year just before the race started and they are doing the same this year,” she added.

“The Race for Life is about women coming together to beat cancer. Year on year we have people come to us and say they have lost a friend or family member because of cancer and that’s the reason they want to take part.

“The number of people who took part in the event last year was over 4,000 and we managed to raise £238,000 in Swindon alone so people are behind the event and we hope more people sign up before the race.”
