CONSTRUCTION work on the ambitious new food quarter of Brunel Shopping Centre is going well.

Tomorrow (Friday), the hoardings will be shifted to let shoppers walk on brand new tiles that have been laid during the past few weeks while builders dig up and replace the old tiles on the part of the walkway that's currently open to the public.

Refurbishment of the customer toilets on the walkway will begin on Monday. The baby changing facilities, gents and disabled toilets will be closed off for renovation.

A temporary wall and door will be built in the nearest ladies toilets to split the bathroom in two, allowing men to use the facilities until renovation is complete while keeping them separate from the women's facilities.

When work on the new gents is complete and work begins on installing similar new hair dryers, cubicles and sinks in the ladies toilets in the future site of the Crossing, the same arrangement will be used with both men and women using the gents' toilets with a dividing wall and separate doors for privacy.

Paving and tiles are being laid over the site of the original outdoor escalator pit to restore that section of Canal Walk to its original condition before work begins on the smaller site of the actual escalator pit which will have an up-only escalator heading into The Crossing from outside Brunel Shopping Centre.

The location of the escalator had to be changed when an underground water main made the original pit unusable.
