A LOVING grandson raised more than £600 in memory of his grandparents this month.

Daniel Rose, manager of the Plough Inn in Devizes Road, held an all-day charity event in the pub and raised a mammoth £607.50 for the British Lung Foundation.

The charity is close to the 30-year-old’s heart as his beloved grandparents Ken and Pauline Brewer died from respiratory illness chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Ken, who was affectionately known as Pop, died in 2009 aged 67 while Pauline died in April last year aged 68.

True to the couple’s passions the charity fundraiser was inspired by their favourite pastimes including bingo and country and western music.

Daniel, who lives in Moredon, said he was delighted with the event's success.

He said: “The Plough is only a pint-sized pub but we’re always big on the welcome here and the friendly atmosphere.

“Everyone who joined us contributed to a brilliant day, and to hand over this money makes us all feel very proud.

“I am very surprised and delighted by the turnout. I think it is such a great charity which does great work supporting people in similar situations to my grandparents.

“We’re a small pub so we really only expected the regulars to come along but we had so many new faces, it went really well.”

The event kicked off with a tea, coffee and cake morning.

In the afternoon there was live jazz. There was also a raffle, auction and bingo.

Daniel was supported by his mother Michelle Rose who also works at the pub. The pair joined forces as duo Snapback to perform in the evening.

Ken was known to many in the community for his live music performances at the Kingsdown Pub, where he met his sweetheart Pauline.

This year the couple would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Daniel said the couple, who shared four children, 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, were sorely missed by the entire family.

He said: “They were devoted to each other and especially to the family.

“They always made people feel welcome and opened up their home to all of us

“They were cheerful, outgoing people who loved being with their family.

“I think the grandchildren were what kept them going.

“We all miss them very much.”

COPD is a progressive condition which causes the linings of the lungs and airways to become irreversibly inflamed.

Daniel also has plans to hold a separate fundraising event in aid of a COPD charity in the near future.
