A police operation involving more than 80 motorists took place across Swindon and the surrounding area yesterday.

Wiltshire Police's Operation Pegasus was carried out across the town resulting in 12 fixed penalty tickets being issued by officers.

Most were for excess speed, with one driver speeding at 47mph in a 30 zone.

Others were issued tickets for having no insurance, driving whilst using a mobile phone and for incorrectly restraining children.

All drivers stopped were also reminded of the new legislation surrounding mobile phones and given warnings.

Police officers, special constables, PCSOs and Community Speed Watch teams were deployed in Swindon, Chiseldon, Wanborough, Highworth and South Marston.

Sgt David Tippetts said: "Operation Pegasus has been organised due to our research in to road traffic collisions in the Swindon area; its aim primarily is to protect road users and pedestrians from harm.

"From our activity yesterday it's clear that the majority of drivers are responsible. There will be further activity in the coming months to target drivers who use their vehicles in an anti-social manner and flout the law on the road.

"However in the meantime, anyone who sees any motorist breaking the law - please contact us."

As part of Wiltshire Police's on-going work with schools, to keep children safe from traffic, high-visibility patrols were also carried out by PCSOs at a number of local schools to remind parents to be mindful of and courteous to pedestrians when driving and parking their vehicles close to schools.
