YOUNGSTERS turned waiters and waitresses to their proud parents at a special primary school café yesterday.

Pupils from Holy Cross Primary School transformed the main hall of their Queen’s Drive site into a café as a treat for their family members.

The café saw 60 primary school pupils serve up sandwiches, cakes, pizza and smoothies to their hungry parents.

A large group of parents watched proudly at the professional display put on by the budding café staff who made the food, took orders and delivered delicious food to the tables.

Harriet Molloy, from the town centre was there to support five-year-old daughter Erin.

The 28-year-old said: “I am so proud of Erin, she has been so good today. She has taken my order and been really professional today. I think it’s such a good idea for children to get involved in things like this because it boosts their confidence and makes them feel happy.”

Veronika Oross, 34, from Walcot enjoyed a ham sandwich courtesy of her five-year-old son Oliver.

She said: “It’s amazing to see Oliver being a waiter, he is a little bit shy so things like this really help to boost his confidence. He has been really professional today.”

Foundation stage leader Jayne Rutherford, who helped organise the event, said the café would help the students develop their social and practical skills.

“It’s teaching them to be independent and giving them confidence.

“All through term there has been a theme of cafes and restaurants with role plays and we have been teaching them the correct way to serve food to their parents, to take orders, to serve food and they have designed their own table setting too.

“We have also been talking about health and hygiene to give me an understanding of what it takes to run a cafe.

“The parents are so proud of them all and so am I and all the teaching staff. The children have been really excited in the run-up to the event and are all doing an amazing job.”

Jayne said the pupils’ influence could be seen in the café’s warm and welcoming atmosphere.

“They have designed everything from the menu to the placemats. They’ve brought in all their own aprons and they’ve been so excited to show what they can do to their parents.

The Holy Cross Queen’s Drive site opened in September 2015 and takes reception and year one pupils.
