SCIENCE projects made by pupils from Ferndale Community Primary School will be shown off at a science fair on Thursday.

Year 6 classes have built rollercoasters and toothbrush robots called ‘bristlebots’ as they learnt about electronics and kinetic energy.

Teacher Liz Mann said her pupils had worked hard and embraced their science week.

She said: “They’ve started from scratch with a range of different motors and batteries and brushes and used their electrical knowledge to create these bristlebots.

“It’s all totally hands-on practical learning that they really enjoy, they love it.”

The children raced their robots and tested out their rollercoasters to get them ready to show their parents at the fair on Thursday afternoon.

Pupil Zara Watson said: “We were swinging a bucket of water around our heads to see if the water would come out but it didn’t because of the centripetal force.”

This experiment showed them how they could send a marble on a loop-de-loop on their rollercoaster without it falling out.

Teaching assistant Sarah Frost said: “They thought it would be quite easy to make a loop but it was really tricky, there was a lot of trial and error.”

They used a website to design a model of their rollercoasters before making them out of foam.

The rest of the school will make their own scientific creations on Monday as part of the school’s two-week event for Year 6 pupils.

Some biology projects, like hatching a chick from an egg and planting and growing a bean plant, have already begun.

The science fair will be held on Thursday from 9am-3.30pm. with parents arriving at 2.30pm.
