SHOPPERS were left with a smile on their faces as they made their way in and out of Asda at the Orbital Centre today.

Pupils from Uplands School, which caters for young people with special educational needs, were in the entranceway working hard to cycle 50 miles on a stationary bike.

This is the fourth event of its kind and the first at the Asda store. The school is trying to raise £10,000 to lease a minibus which, in the current funding climate, they cannot afford on their own.

Genti Mullaliu, Principal at Uplands, said: "The bus will be used to get our learners to their work placements all around Swindon.

"They have all been great. We bring a different cohort along each time we do this but we try to let them all take part - even the ones in a wheelchair, we bring a hand bike for them.

"It's important they all feel part of this because they will all benefit from the minibus."

Genti added that not only was it an important fundraising exercise, but that the chance to get out and interact with the public was a valuable opportunity to boost the confidence of the kids and to break down barriers.

As they shook their collection buckets and thanked shoppers who stopped to donate, it was clear the young people were really embracing the event.

Rockin' Robin, Swindon Town's energetic mascot, was on hand too - mainly to get in the way of trolleys and give everyone a laugh, but also to help raise some cash.

Also getting involved was Justin Tomlinson who donned his trainers to cover a mile along with the Uplands pupils.

The North Swindon MP joked that he asked the kids to put the downhill settings on before he set off on his leg of the 50 mile journey.

"What I love is how all of the learners are involved and how excited they're getting," said Justin.

"Their enthusiasm is infectious and it's a brilliant way to build up their confidence and skills as well as raising vital funds.

"It's about preparing these young people for later life."
