Sam Wylie-Harris hunts down some top drops for Easter entertaining

The Easter bank holiday weekend is the perfect excuse to have a spring fling.

Whether you're hosting family and friends or just want to please yourself, the secret is not to put all your eggs in one basket and have a variety of wines to match the myriad of mouth-watering flavours.

From a casual Good Friday fish supper, to a Sunday roast of spring lamb, here are some top drops to cheer a happy bunny and make sure you don't get caught on the hop...

GOOD FRIDAY FISH

Jean Claude Mas Classic Organic Vin Blanc 2016, France (£5.99, Aldi, in-store and online from April 5)

When it comes to a creamy fish pie, a fruity white with plenty of ripe stone fruit flavours is a terrific match. Famed winemaker Jean Claude Mas continues to make fresh, modern wines and you can't go wrong with this clean, bright white that has lots of spring-has-sprung freshness, white flower aromas and an array of light tropical notes.

Jordi Miro White Grenache 2016, Spain (£9.50, Marks & Spencer, in-store)

If you're hunting down a crisp white to serve with seafood starters, this Spanish gem has a lovely texture with a buoyant freshness. Mainly grenache with a splash of macabeo, it has baskets of zesty citrus fruits with a touch of mango and spice, and yet there's a sensation of roundness and smoothness that strikes a perfect balance.

Chateau Tour Leognan 2012, France (£14.99, Waitrose, in-store)

With so many top reds from Bordeaux, it's easy to forget about its exciting dry whites, especially from Pessac-Leognan. Rich and fresh with plenty of lemony, grapefruit goodness, this blend of 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon has grassy aromatics with a flash of oak. Barrel fermented for extra richness, it would pair perfectly with firm white fish and a beurre blanc sauce.

EASTER SUNDAY ROAST

Lamatum Crianza 2013, Ribera del Duero, Spain (£8.99, Majestic)

The modern face of Rioja, this crianza has a little bit of oak ageing for some cedar freshness and it's a mellow, approachable style that's silky and round with heaps of sweet savoury blackberry and cherry fruits. Made with 100% tempranillo, spicy aromas, a lick of vanilla and smooth tannins parcel it nicely together. Delicious with tender, young, spring lamb.

Brunello di Montalcino 2010, Italy (£15.99, Lidl)

More mature lamb needs a red with a little more oomph to stand up to the stronger, savoury meat and this plush Tuscan has been rated outstanding (90 points) by Lidl's master of wine. A real treat, it's velvety soft with earthy, herbal aromas and a forest floor of brambly fruits provide the perfect backdrop to lamb spiked with Rosemary and garlic. One glass can't help but lead to another.

Diane de Belgrave Haut-Medoc 2011, Bordeaux, France (£19, Oddbins)

Another contender for time-honoured Easter fare, this plummy smooth claret can be enjoyed with all roasted meats and offers rich merlot fruit. From a good vintage, it's rich and ripe with textured blackberry fruits, herbal highlights and a savoury minty note. Elegant and easy to drink, yet the tannins are firm enough to cope with all the trimmings... as well as a board of charcuterie.

CHOCOLATE DESSERTS

TTD Valpolicella Ripasso 2014, Italy (£11, Sainsbury's)

This wine may not have a chocolate box label, but it's the perfect foil to roasted plums topped with grated dark chocolate. Warm and earthy with just a little sweetness, it's a full-bodied red made from partially dried grapes (ripasso process) for more concentrated flavours. Yummy.
