RUNNERS and walkers will be gathering at Coate Water on Saturday to celebrate St George’s Day a day early, with a 5km jog or jaunt.

The fundraising event will be started under the shadow of the world’s largest St George figure, and followed by good old English lardy cake and tea at the Sun Inn.

The run/walk will follow an easy route around Coate Water lake and is open to everyone, including children, dogs and dragons. It is being organised to raise money to put on special events for local disadvantaged children at the Richard Jefferies Museum at Coate Water. All entrants will be awarded a special St George’s Day medal, as well as other prizes if they run or walk in ‘international’ fancy dress.

Museum volunteer Mike Pringle said: “This is going to be a good, fun event. We want to celebrate the wonderful multicultural country we live in. Although I am thinking about wearing a kilt, so I’m not sure what people will think about that.”

The event starts at 9.15am, from the Sun Inn. Entry online at www.richardjefferies.org or on the day.
