THE Wroughton Spring Show was in full bloom at the weekend as residents from all over the village turned out for a pleasant afternoon in the sunshine.

The show, organised by the Wroughton and District Gardeners’ Society, has been a popular annual event since 1946, and Saturday’s fair certainly proved a winner.

Held at the Ellendune Community Centre, the fair saw impressive-looking home grown fruit and veg judged by professional judges with prizes handed to the winners.

Also under the scrutiny of judges were flowers, potted plants, pieces of photography and art, cakes and preserves.

And show secretary Julie Dowsett was thrilled to see the fair come together after such diligent preparations.

She said: “Today’s show is very much a traditional spring fair. All the items are judged by professional judges and we have a wide range of categories.

“We started organising it last year and it’s great to finally be able to present everything to the public.

“It’s always a good family event where people can come and enjoy tea and cakes, take part in the raffle and buy some flowers and plants.

“It’s great for the local community, especially on a sunny day like this. We want to encourage new members to join our gardening society and this is a good opportunity to show people what we do.”

There was a plant stall set up outside as well as a raffle and a sale of all the exhibits on display.

Margaret Moore, 77, from Wroughton, is a regular visitor to the Spring Show.

She said: “I always enjoy coming here, they put on a really good spread. I can’t imagine how much organisation goes into something like this, but it’s a credit to the society.

“They have some great things this year. I really like the art work they have – some people are very talented.”

Pensioner Joyce McGovern, who lives in West Swindon spoke about how nice it was to see people out enjoying the sun.

She said: “We’ve been very lucky with the weather, it’s such a beautiful day. Events like this are such a great opportunity for the whole family to come and enjoy themselves, and it’s good to meet other people.”
