IN THEIR final league game of the season, Chippenham Town made the most of home comforts as they ran out 2-0 winners against St Ives Town at Hardenhuish Park.

The win also means the Bluebirds have finished the season with a record 103 points, overhauling Hemel Hempstead Town’s 2013/14 season points total of 102.

David Pratt kicked things off with an acrobatic effort in the first-half before Matt Smith doubled the lead shortly afterwards.

However there was a substantial break in play after St Ives' Josh Dawkin suffered a double leg break during the opening 45 minutes.

At the end of the game, Chippenham were presented the trophy for winning the Southern League Premier Division title and manager Mark Collier was delighted to finally get his hands on it.

“It was a good day for everybody at the club. It was great to win the game 2-0 under difficult circumstances because of the injury,” said the Chippenham boss.

“We were 2-0 up at half-time and the game was over before the injury and the second-half was one we coasted through.

“It was a case of getting the referee to blow that whistle so the celebrations could start.

“We have won the league by 11 points, scored lots of goals and ticked all of the boxes since day one of the season.

“If we look at it in the cold light of day, we have been the dominant force in a difficult division so that is credit to everybody.”

The Bluebirds won the league title without kicking a ball when nearest rivals Leamington lost to Biggleswade Town on Good Friday.

With the National League around the corner, Collier admits his title-winning campaign is starting to sink in as they begin to plot towards next season.

“We wanted to go out with a bit of a bang if we could and score more goals in the second-half but they were resolute,” added Collier.

“It’s starting to sink in. We have a magnificent shield, with some massive football clubs on it and it is fantastic to have it.

“We are going to enjoy the next couple of days and then I have a meeting with the chairman early in the week where we will start to put some plans in place for next season.

“It’s exciting because we are starting to progress but we must make sure that we do it in the right manner.

“I’m excited. I was excited when I got the Chippenham job and I was excited when we started progressing.

“The building blocks are in place to push on in another unforgiving division.”
