Occupational therapist, and nurse's daughter, Clare Compton spent her childhood hearing so many wonderful stories about how the NHS was there for people in their hour of need.

She has now found herself as one of the faces heading up the Great Western Hospital's new recruitment campaign.

Real-life doctors and nurses, along with physiotherapists, midwives and admin staff, have lent their faces to a set of eight new posters that highlight the diverse range of career opportunities available at the Great Western Hospital and in the community teams across Swindon.

Each poster shows a different member of staff with either a patient or others from their team with a slogan that captures what it is they love about their job.

Clare said: "My mum showed me how rewarding a career in healthcare could be, but it wasn't until I was in my teens that I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps.

"I was actually working in Specsavers when I realised I wanted to pursue a career in occupational therapy.

"The buzz that comes from helping someone carry out the everyday activities that most of us do without even thinking about was massive and I knew straight away it was all I wanted to do.

"My training was fantastic as I was able to do it nearby with Oxford Brookes University and, since qualifying, I've been helping people in their own homes to live healthy, independent lives.

"Working outside of the traditional hospital setting is lovely as not only do you get to travel around but it means you really get to know the people you're looking after which, for me, is one of the best parts of the job."

It’s hoped this new approach to recruitment will get the message out to the people of Swindon and the surrounding areas that their local NHS is the ideal place to start, or even kick-start, their career.

The new posters, currently on display in and around the Swindon hospital, as well as at the Orbital Shopping Park, are backed up by a series of radio adverts which are set to hit the airwaves in the days following the long Easter weekend.

This is the first time that Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has used a targeted multimedia approach to recruitment and it’s hoped the personal feel of the campaign will strike a chord with anyone who may have thought a career in the health service was not for them.
