WORKERS at Swindon’s BMW plant will strike tomorrow in a dispute over pensions.

Bosses at the company’s Stratton site will see employees down tools for 24 hours following the decision to scrap the pension scheme.

It is a move that union Unite says could see some workers lose up to £160,000 in retirement income.

John McGookin, Unite’s Swindon representative, said: “We are expecting people to be out in numbers tomorrow to make their voices heard.

“The plant will not be producing anything and we don’t expect anybody to be on site, except the management team.

“We have had numerous meetings with bosses and my colleagues were in London today searching for a way forward.

“We will be holding further strikes unless something materialises before then.”

The walkouts over BMW’s plans to close the final salary pension scheme are among the first ever by the firm’s UK workforce and they follow a 93 per cent vote in favour of strike action by workers at the German carmaker’s sites at Cowley, Goodwood, Hams Hall and Swindon.

Twenty-four hour strikes will also take place in Swindon on Thursday, May 18 and Sunday, May 21.

BMW has called for a solution to be found.
