DRIVERS using Cross Street, in Old Town, have been left going round the bend, quite literally, this week after the late arrival of a Swindon Borough Council one-way sign.

The sign had previously been on a lamppost at the junction of Prospect Hill but last week residents in the area started noticing cars turning right down the one-way street, with many fearing it could cause an accident.

Toby Robson, who lives in Prospect Hill, said his partner had to wave down a car to stop it turning right and potentially causing an accident.

“Some people have ignored the road markings which show an arrow pointing left so it just seems bizarre that the sign is missing,” he said.

“We spoke to the Beehive pub after it happened and they said they have seen a few people coming down the hill when they shouldn’t be.

“The problem we have in the past is people using their satnavs or getting lost in the back streets and end up going the wrong way down Prospect Hill.

“I don’t know how many accidents there have been, if any, but because Cross Street is a two lane road, anyone coming around the corner could have easily hit someone turning the wrong way.”

After the Adver contacted the council, the sign was put back up on the lamppost yesterday morning.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: “The street lamp was replaced as it was found to be defective and this also meant a new one-way sign and light was required.

“Unfortunately, these were only delivered to us this week. They were fitted on Wednesday morning and we will be taking the delay up with our supplier.”
