A COUPLE who cashed stolen cheques for almost £30,000 have been warned they could be facing a jail term.

Carl Potter and Jodie Thompson made the eight deposits between the end of June and Tuesday September 6 last year.

Potter, 27, and Thompson, 24, both pleaded guilty to one count of fraud totalling £29,450 when they appeared at Swindon Crown Court.

Colin Meeke, prosecuting, told the court that Thompson, of Mulberry Grove, has entered a basis of plea saying she played a secondary role in the enterprise.

He said that while Potter, of Knowsley Road, denied he had taken the actual cheques, it was he who knew the victim Leokadia Sabat.

“The Crown takes the view that this is a joint enterprise. Whoever took the cheque book, they both knew what was happening to it in the end,” Mr Meeke said.

Recorder Jason Taylor adjourned the case to Friday, June 23, and released the pair on bail until then.

He said: “You have both pleaded guilty today. You will be given full credit for your pleas in due course.

“I will adjourn your cases for presentence reports. It is utterly important that you co-operate with probation because it is there to help you.

“You must know that that doesn’t give you any indication of the sentences you will receive. All options are open to the court.”
