FOODIES and cider lovers gathered at a popular pub at the weekend to sample some of the finest ales and tastiest beverages in town.

The Pig on the Hill, in Old Town, welcomed revellers to its annual beer and cider festival to celebrate the bank holiday in style.

And although the sun failed to shine quite as bright as it had in previous days, drinkers could not be persuaded against sitting in the pub’s pleasant garden and enjoying a tipple.

Rod and Alison Lichfield, from Stratton, were happy to while away a Saturday afternoon among the many gins.

Rod, 57, with hog roast in hand, said: “We came along today because we wanted to sample the beers and ciders and enjoy a bit of sunshine.

“It’s a shame it’s not a little bit warmer, but the staff here have put on a really good show and it’s wonderful.”

There was a wide range of beers, ales, ciders and gins to try and buy and third-of-a-pint tasters were available for those who wanted to test their palettes.

A hog roast and delightful samples of street food were available, ensuring the booze was soaked up easily enough.

Tracey Simpson, 46, from North Swindon, had popped down with her two sons, Richard and Michael, for a couple of hours on Saturday.

She said: “I thought I’d come along to see what all the fuss was about. I had actually seen it advertised in the Adver and I thought it sounded like my sort of thing.

“It’s great to see people enjoying some nice food and drink and sitting in the sun, though it’s a bit cold at the moment.”

Lind and Pete Robbins, for whom The Pig on the Hill is a regular hangout spot, were thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Pete said: “It’s a great day to sample a few delicacies. I like a good ale and it’s fair to say they have been impressive so far.”

The festivities kicked off on Friday and will continue right through until Sunday evening.

Local band The Tribe will play an acoustic set at the pub on Sunday at 3pm.
