WILTSHIRE Police has confirmed that the national threat level has been decreased from Critical to Severe. A threat level of severe means that an attack is still highly likely.

There remains no specific threat to Wiltshire or the region but as a precaution officers both armed and unarmed were on patrol in key locations across the county over the weekend to offer reassurance. After the bank holiday weekend, police say they will be looking to step down the extra resources that were in place over the last week.

The military support which has been in place in key locations across the country will also start to phase out.

Although the threat level has returned to severe, there may still be additional security checks at ports, airports and rail stations. Passengers should plan in advance and allow extra time to travel where possible.

“The reduction in the assessment of the threat level does not mean we become complacent, “ said a police spokesman.

“We will continue to work tirelessly, and in conjunction with our partners to protect and keep us all safe.

“We understand that the events of the past week may have caused a great deal of anxiety and we would encourage you to approach our officers and ask any questions you may have.

Our key message to the public remains – ‘Be alert but not alarmed’. Please continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity on 0800 789 321 or in an emergency always call 999.
