WILTSHIRE Police has moved quickly to reassure residents of Swindon and the rest of the county following last night's major terrorist attack in London.

Seven people were killed by attackers who rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge at around 10pm before going on a stabbing spree in the nearby Borough Market area.

Armed police officers responded to the scene in huge numbers and three men were shot dead within eight minutes of the initial call - the Metropolitan Police believes they were the only attackers.

A further 48 people, including an on duty British Transport Police officer, were taken to hospitals across London with varying degrees of injuries.

At around 9am this morning, Wiltshire Police issued a statement in relation to the attack.

A spokesman for the force said: "Our thoughts today are with the people caught up in the dreadful attack at London Bridge and Borough Market in the capital last night.

"We would like to stress that there is nothing at this stage to suggest an increased level of threat in Wiltshire or the South West.

"Additional patrols are being deployed to reassure the public, particularly in crowded areas.

"Please remain vigilant as you go about your business. In the rare event of an attack, RUN, HIDE, TELL."

Senior officers have paid tribute to the courage and determination shown by their emergency service colleagues in the capital last night and into the early hours of the morning.

The Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police, Mike Veale, tweeted: "Our breathtakingly courageous front line emergency services who protect our communities have my absolute admiration and respect. Incredible!"

His comments were echoed by Assistant Chief Constable Kier Pritchard who described the incident in London as "horrific" and said his thoughts were with officers responding in London and those who had lost their lives.
