A TOUCH of the mythical world of Game of Thrones was in evidence at Bishopstone’s very traditional English country garden fete on Saturday.
Tara Fitzgerald, who plays Queen Selyse Baratheon in the popular TV series, mingled happily with locals before opening the event at Prebendal Farm to raise money for the parish church St Mary the Virgin and St Swithun’s at nextdoor Hinton Parva.
The star, was enjoying her first visit to the picturesque village and was enchanted by the fete.
“It is quintessentially English,” she said. “This is exactly like you imagine a fete would have been in your childhood.”
The day hosted by Rob and Jo Selbourne, featured traditional stalls and side shows along with a display of vintage vehicles, an armoured car once used by the Royal Hong Kong Police and a steam traction engine.
Among the cars on display were a 1930s Morgan and a much younger model from 2015.
There was also a chance for the more nimble visitors to have a go at tree climbing, enjoy a cream tea and listen to live music from groups including the village’s own Cheesehouse Band.
“It is a very village affair,” said Rob. “A lot of people got involved with it and everybody has been very supportive.”
He explained Tara was invited to open the event because they were old friends with her mother Sarah, who was also a guest on the day.
“Her mother did the arm-twisting for us, but Tara was very willing,” he joked.
