A fun day held in Walcot in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox earlier this month has raised £500 for charity.

The event on June 17 was one of many held across the country over that weekend in Jo's honour to bring local communities together in celebration of inclusivity, diversity and community spirit.

The area around Walcot Library and Community Centre was transformed into a multicultural street party with music and entertainment from several different countries, plus a Disney-themed parade and lots of fun activities for children.

All of the money raised will go toward the British Red Cross UK Solidarity Fund to help victims of terrorist attacks anywhere in the UK.

The ambitious event also coincided with the opening of the £10 million Sussex Place regeneration scheme.

Swindon Borough Councillor Derique Montaut spent months planning with Walcot Charity Shop director Sue Martin to make their ideas a reality.

Councillor Montaut said: "The level of public support is greater than I ever expected, it shows people love their town and community.

"We just wanted people to have a good time and the people in the Parks area had an extremely good time, they opened their hearts.

"This will hopefully be an annual event."

Derique proudly wore a Yorkshire rose to honour Jo and got his nails painted to get into the light-hearted spirit of the occasion.

He added: "I want to say a big thank-you to Sue and everyone else who helped make this happen, it really went beyond expectations - it ballooned out from our original plans."
