WILTSHIRE Police dealt with 3,145 vehicle crimes last year, according to newly-collated figures.

The force was ranked 34 out of 43 in a list of force regions that recorded the most incidents.

The Metropolitan Police had the most crimes with 89,000 cases, followed by West Midlands Police with 29,106, according to the research by the click4reg.co.uk website.

In Swindon last year 50 vehicle crimes were recorded in the north of the borough during October, with another 33 to the south during the same month.

Ben Leonard, the managing director at click4reg, said: “The figures are certainly fascinating. Vehicle crime is certainly more prevalent than anyone would expect.

“While unfortunate, there are various effective actions that drivers can take to safeguard their vehicle from any potential crime.

“All drivers should aim to make simple steps such as locking doors and removing all valuable possessions when not in their vehicle a habit.

"Making such behaviours a daily routine, will go a long way in protecting driver’s vehicles from opportunist criminals and thieves.

"Overall, more awareness and precaution from drivers can go a significantly long way in reducing the numbers of vehicle crime across the UK.“
