A 13-year-old boy from Old Town is taking the next step on the road to stardom after wowing pop superstars with his audition for The Voice Kids.

Lewis Blissett performed in front of judges Pixie Lott, will.i.am and Danny from McFly with a cover of Pixie's song Cry Me Out on June 24.

As his nervous family watched backstage, Lewis quickly won over Pixie with his performance and he joined her team after all three judges turned around to recruit him.

He filmed his audition for the show before Christmas but couldn't tell his classmates at Commonweal School about his success until the footage aired.

After singing for as long as he can remember and dreaming of being a pop star for years, Lewis is still getting used to being in the spotlight.

He said: “A lot of people have come up to me at school saying I was really good. It’s weird, but in a good way.

“It’s quite crazy because it went from nobody knowing who I was to ‘Oh, look it’s him’, I’m very thankful.”

Lewis lists Justin Bieber, Drake, Ariane Grande, and Pixie herself as some of his favourite artists.

He added: “Pixie’s an inspiration to me, I listened to her as I was growing up. I preferred her to the other coaches because she’s influenced me more.

“I didn’t even realise she’d turned around until the end of the song, I was so focused on singing, and now she coaches me every month and there’s a lot that I didn’t know.”

He takes part in the battle stage on Sunday, July 9, competing against two other singers at 7.30pm on ITV.

All three competitors will have to take turns singing the same song and he has no idea what that song will be.

He said: “I’m not that nervous about the battle and I wasn’t about the audition either, I was just happy that I was able to perform on the stage.

“If I get through to the semi-final, I'd like to sing something by Ariana or Demi Lovato, it suits my vocal range and I’m used to belting songs with lots of riffs and trills.”

His mum Kelly Newman was full of pride and excitement for her little boy’s success.

She said: “Through the whole process, I’ve been more nervous than him, shaking backstage and losing sleep while he just takes it all in his stride.

“Swindon has been amazing, I’ve had more than 400 messages on facebook wishing him luck and people have been stopping me in the street to tell me how great he is.

“It’s been unbelievable, I couldn’t be more proud.”

His father, Shane Blissett, lives in Newbury with some of Lewis’s grandparents and he was thrilled by how well his son had done.

He said: “Lewis was fab, we love him loads, he’s got a lot of support in Newbury and everyone is so proud of him.”

Lewis’ stepdad Paul McKinlay said: “We had a barbecue with around 20 people to watch the audition, it was great, and we always hear him singing in the bathroom at home.

“Seeing him get up on the stage in front of the judges, he looked so small up there, he’s got real guts.”

  • Lewis will be performing three songs at the WrdeUp Festival in Highworth on Saturday, July 8, at 5pm.
