A GROUP of cheeky shop workers have done their bit to expose the amount of packaging used for high street products.
Staff at Lush in Canal Walk shed their uniforms yesterday to draw attention to the way packaging is contributing to climate change.
Katie Bagwell and Steve Webb took to the streets to pass on the importance of getting naked - with packaging at least.
Katie, 17, said: "When I got to work and saw the pinnies we were wearing I really thought it was a bad idea.
"But once we got onto the street and started explaining our message the nerves just faded.
"The vast majority of people were very receptive to what we had to say, though a few seemed a bit annoyed that we were naked.
"The point we wanted to get across is that so much fuel and money is spent on putting things in complicated packets, and it's just not necessary."
Mark Constantine, founder of the national cosmetics company, is leading a campaign to eliminate packaging by selling naked' products that do not require plastic bottles.
The firm also removes water from many of its products, including shampoo bars and conditioners.
This means they, and other products such as body butters and soaps, can be sold to the customer without any packaging.
Mark said: "Packaging is rubbish and for too long we have had to suffer excessive amounts of it.
"Now that the true financial and environmental costs are becoming obvious, customers are challenging manufacturers and retailers to cut the wrap.
"Companies like ours need to think outside the box and present customers with innovations that allow them to buy truly naked products.
Lush's naked campaign is taking place in 55 cities across the UK, and coincides with a Channel 4 program presented by Mr Constantine.
The programmes, called The Insider: Packaging is Rubbish, airs ton Friday at 7pm.
