TEACHERS at Hazelwood Academy are hoping to raise £5,000 for a new lollipop lady.

The Stokesay Drive school lost its crossing warden in February. They were told at the time that the retired warden would not be replaced at that time.

Council bosses promised to undertake a traffic survey to establish how busy the road was and what could help children cross the road.

In May, Hazelwood Academy headteacher Suzanne Lloyd said that a pupil had had a narrow escape after almost being hit by a car.

"Our parents are really concerned," she told the Adver. "We're urging the council to look at this as a priority."

Tired of waiting for a new crossing warden or engineered road crossing, the school has partnered with Toothill Big Local to try and raise £5,000 to partially fund a new crossing warden.

The warden would be employed by Swindon Borough Council, the school said. But it would be funded by Hazelwood Academy and other sources.

In order to win the £5,000 funding from Toothill Big Local, the school needs to get at least 175 votes on their online fundraising page.
