SWINDON mayor Maureen Penny joined dozens of golfers to tee off at Wrag Barn Golf Club on Friday - all in aid of helping Swindon Cares raise money for two charities.

The annual event saw 20 teams take part in the 18-hole competition that aimed to raise money for Swindon Women’s Aid and The Nelson Trust.

The event has gone from strength to strength over the last 14 years and first-time organisers Chris Harrison and Anthony McAteer were on hand for golfers yesterday.

Swindon Cares hopes to raise at least £15,000 this year to be split between its chosen two beneficiaries.

Karen Jacklin from Swindon Women’s Aid said the money raised from the event will go towards helping the children of victims with special events and activities.

Whereas events coordinator Melissa Atherton from The Nelson Trust said: “For us the money will keep our centre in Swindon going. It means we can create an art group and keep our lunch club running – it is enabling us to carry on.”

While the organisation is still totalling up every last penny, organisers say they were thrilled by the turnout and support from people in the golfing community.

After teeing off with just one try, novice golfer Maureen added: "This is such a great day and talking to everyone shows they are backing the event."

The fundraiser was sponsored by Euro Car Parts and BCM.
