A WOMAN who assaulted a man at a town centre house has been released on bail by judge.

Louise Smith pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding when she appeared before Swindon Crown Court.

And the 43-year-old also admitted assaulting a police officer during the incident on Friday, May 26.

Smith left her victim needing surgery following the incident in Whitehead Street.

Colin Meeke, prosecuting, said as a result of the assault he needed a minor operation to repair a vein and a tendon.

He said while the defendant had initially only been charged with actual bodily harm the injury was so serious as to merit a charge of wounding.

Smith, who gave the court an address in Buttermere, Liden, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and assaulting a police officer.

She was jailed for three-and-a-half years in 2011 after she launched an assault on her then partner leaving him with injuries a judge said were 'not for the squeamish'.

Ellen McAnaw, defending, said that her client had mental health issues having been diagnosed while in prison.

She said it was not clear what part her problems played in the assault and how much alcohol influenced it.

Recorder Rosie Collins adjourned the case to Friday, August 11, so a presentence report can be prepared.

She released her on bail to live in Wales apart from the night before the next hearing and when she needs to attend the Great Western Hospital for a procedure next month.

Smith left her then boyfriend seriously injured after she attacked him with a broken Flintstones mug in a vicious revenge attack in November 2009.

She used the sharp edge of the shattered novelty china drinking vessel to stab and slash the neck and back of Dean Montgomery.

At first he claimed he had been attacked on the way home from the pub but eventually admitted what had happened when questioned.

The court heard that he had assaulted his partner before neighbours heard her setting about him, stabbing him with the razor sharp crockery.
