FANS of The Voice Kids semi-finalist Lewis Blissett have started a campaign for him to turn on the Christmas lights in Swindon this year.

The 13-year-old from Old Town wowed pop superstar judges in the singing competition earlier this month and made it to the final 12 contestants before he left the show.

His aunt Kate Pitts Drake set up a facebook group on Friday to start the Campaign For Lewis Blissett To Turn On The Swindon Christmas Lights.

She quickly received support from almost 200 people pushing for the singing sensation to be the star guest who gets to switch the lights on at the traditional festive event.

Kate said: “We were talking about the Swindon Christmas lights and how we could never remember the people who turned them on.

“We thought it would be good to have someone Swindon born and bred like Lewis to switch them on and perform there, and he’s well-known so it would raise Swindon’s profile.”

Lewis’ performances have racked up hundreds of thousands of views online and he received overwhelming support from Swindonians during his time on the show.

Since leaving the competition, he’s been offered a place at his Voice Kids coach Pixie Lott’s summer school and been contacted by record labels who have expressed interest in the young pop lover.

He'll also be performing at the James Bulger Memorial Trust Kids Fest in Liverpool on August 20.

Kate added: “It would be huge for him to be in front of the thousands of people who attend the event.

“I’ve spoken to several people since Friday who said it was a great idea but they didn’t know about the campaign, so I want to get the word out and get people behind us.

“The support for him when he was on The Voice Kids was amazing so I thought ‘Why not give this a go?’

Lewis' mum Kelly Newman said: "I think it's a brilliant idea, Lewis is a young Swindon lad who might inspire other youngsters who go to the event.

"When he heard about his aunt's campaign, he said he'd love to do it and represent Swindon, he's really fond of this town as he's had so much love from people here."

Last year, former Coronation Street actor and Wyvern Theatre’s panto star Ryan Thomas was the star guest at the switch-on, which also featured a performance from former X Factor winner Ben Haenow and was presented by Heart Radio DJs Ben and Mel.

The annual event is organised by the inSwindon Business Improvement District Company and attracts huge crowds of revellers.

Every year, the town centre is transformed into a festive extravaganza with lots of fun and fireworks to get everyone in the Christmas spirit, followed by a similar event in Old Town which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

This year’s big switch-on is due to take place on Saturday, November 18.
