Hip-hop princes of sass in Swindon

WELSH rappers Goldie Lookin Chain will be dropping in to Swindon tomorrow bringing a taste of controversial, comedic hip-hop.

The eight-piece band, best known for their hit singles Guns Don’t Kill People Rappers Do, Half Man Half Machine, Your Missus Is A Nutter and You Knows I Love You, are part of a drive to bring top bands to the new look Level III nightclub in Commercial Road.

2Hats, Eggsy, Billy Webb, Mystikal, Mike Balls, Adam Hussain, Rhys aka PXain and Graham the Bear who make up the current line-up of Goldie Lookin Chain are known for their satire, poking fun at the chavs of society, the American hip-hop scene and their own heartland of Newport.

The rappers are strong football supporters, particularly of Newport County, they sponsored the club in the 2004-2005 season. They were stable mates on East/West Record label with The Darkness and supported them on their UK tour. They also shared the same stage as Super Furry Animals and The Streets.

Their latest album, Pill Communication, is out now.

“This is our ninth or 10th proper album and I think it’s the best one so far.” says GLC stalwart Eggsy.”We are dedicating the album to Terry Wogan and Paul Daniels who were both massive GLC fans.”

A night of melody

SHOWBIZ legends Showaddywaddy will be entertaining the crowds at the Wyvern tonight.

Formed in the 1970s in Leicester from several local bands, they have sold more than 20 million records and have toured all corners of the world extensively.

Their live show is dynamic and uplifting featuring all of their biggest hits, many of which reached number one in the pop charts of Europe, including Under The Moon of Love, Three Steps to Heaven, Hey Rock & Roll, When, Blue Moon, Pretty Little Angel Eyes and many, many more.

Drummer Romeo Challenger, one of the founder members of Showaddywaddy, believes the band’s longevity is down to the fact they are all about entertaining the crowd.

“We don’t have any political undercurrent, it’s not our agenda, we give entertainment to people.

“We have been going for more than 40 years and our fans are inducted into our music by their parents, the music is played around the home,” said Romeo.

The band enjoy meeting and greeting their fans after the shows and tomorrow, fans will have a chance to get up close and personal to their rock ‘n’ roll heroes at a Dancin’ Party at Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre.

Following on from the success of last year’s Next Chapter album the band are currently working on a new project, but Romeo says at the live shows they make sure they play all the big hits. Tickets are £23 from 01793 524481 or swindontheatres.co.uk.
