A Swindon-based lawyer with a fear of heights has taken on a daredevil airborne stunt to raise money for charity.

Christine Bunting, 57, a director of Hyphen Law, was strapped onto the outside of a biplane and flown at speeds of up to 135mph across the Gloucestershire countryside as she walked along the plane’s wings.

As if that wasn’t enough, the pilot, a member of the Breitling Wing Walking team, took her on a series of heart-stopping acrobatics, with fly-pasts at low heights and sharp dives added to the experience.

The money raised, over £1,700 to date, will go to the charity Cerebra, helping children and young people with brain-related conditions.

“That was by far the most terrifying but incredible experience I have ever had,” said Christine, back on solid ground.

“It was a challenge I decided on in the winter months when I was trying to think of something that people would pay me to do.

“It seemed like a good idea at the time but I have to admit when I was getting ready to leave, I was having some second thoughts.”

Christine added: “The young people and their families that Cerebra support face huge challenges every single day so a wing walk for 20 minutes pales in comparison – even though it did seem like the longest 20 minutes of my life.”

Her family watched on amazed as she was strapped to the 1940s Boeing Stearman biplane, much as they were when she overcame her vertigo in another challenge to raise money for Cerebra two years ago. On that occasion, she skydived over Salisbury Plain, raising £3,500 for the charity.

Comparing the two experiences, she said: “Given that they both involved surrendering myself to the sky and the care of others they were actually very different, as were my anxieties – although the common theme was my fear of heights.

“Would I do it again? For Cerebra, absolutely, yes. For fun, well, maybe when the memory fades a little!”
