ALL of Thamesdown Drive will be relined later this month and resurfacing work will be carried out on the A419 shortly afterwards.

The work will be carried out during the night when traffic is at its lightest.

It is expected to take no longer than two weeks to complete and through-traffic will be maintained at all times.

The fresh coat of paint will make markings on the road more visible, while more markings will be added to cut down the likelihood of accidents on the A419.

Councillor for Priory Vale Emma Faramarzi said: “Anything that increases visibility and safety on Thamesdown Drive is a good thing and I hope to hear plans for further safety measures from Angus Macpherson in the fututre.”

A spokesman for Swindon Borough Council said: “As part of the Annual Safety Review, the Traffic Team have identified a number of schemes which qualify for funding.

“One of the schemes prioritised is refreshing the road markings on Thamesdown Drive.

“A number of road traffic collisions have taken place and the aim of this scheme is to make key areas such as ‘STOP’ lines and hazard markings more visible.

“It is hoped that refreshing the road markings will give clearer visual clues to motorists and thus further improve safety at these locations.

“There are also a number of additional road markings to be put down such as providing ‘look left’ and ‘look right’ markings at crossing points for pedestrians, and improving some of the guide line markings in the centre of junctions to help opposing drivers turn right around each other.”

Three stages of road works will follow on the A419 from Tuesday August 29.

The main road is being resurfaced and parts of it will be closed while this work is being carried out.

The section of the road Southbound from Lady Lane in Blunsdon to the Toys R Us by the White Hart roundabout will be closed for the night from 8pm to 6am.

The Northbound lanes of the same stretch of road will be closed every night for the same hours from Wednesday, August 30 to Wednesday, September 6.

For the final phase, the Northbound part of the A-road from Commonhead to White Hart will be closed nightly from Thursday September 7 to Thursday September 21, with additional road closures on that stretch for the entire weekend of September 9 and 10.

Blunsdon Parish Councillor Mick Compton said: “I would imagine that it’s going to cause untold chaos, I hope good plans are in place to deal with the diverted traffic.”

Councillor for St Margaret and South Marston John Haines said: “I believe they’ll be laying down a low-decibel surface to reduce the road noise which will make it better for residents in the area.

“I am concerned about the extra traffic in small lanes in Stratton, especially Ermin Street, but it has to be done.”

Fellow ward councillor Colin Lovell said: “We know there’ll be an inconvenience but we have to be patient as it’ll be worth it in the end.”
