A TRAVELLER camp has moved onto a disused car park off Fleming Way.

An estimated ten caravans and nine vans drove onto the tarmac behind the former Carfax Street health centre building on Friday evening.

The camp included vehicles with Republic of Ireland number plates. At least one of the vans had livery suggesting it belonged to a cleaning business.

One local businesswoman, who did not wish to be named, suggested that the caravans had been able to access the site because it had been left unused.

“I blame the council,” she said. “They have all this spare ground – you’d have thought they’d do something with it.”

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: "Officers will visit the travellers and continue to monitor the situation."
