IF YOU'RE looking for holiday activities closer to home this summer then a keen group of cyclists have an idea for you.

Swindonians are being urged to hop on their bikes to explore the town's growing network of cycle paths with a free orienteering challenge laid on to get them in the mood.

Back by popular demand, the event is being laid on by the Swindon Cycle Campaign whose aim includes encouraging people to explore their local area of two wheels.

This summer's iteration of the challenge features a brand new cycle orienteering map to help you navigate your way around Swindon on traffic-free cycle paths and discover so much more from the saddle of your bike.

Organiser, Becky Cox, said: "You choose what route you’d like to take and how far you’d like to go. The event is suitable for anyone who can ride a bike and we encourage people of all ages and abilities to join in the fun.

"There’s the option to ride for one, two or three hours.

"Collect orienteering points along the way and hand your points cards in at the checkpoint when you finish - prizes will be awarded for the three highest scores in each time category."

There is no charge for entry and anyone wishing to take part can either sign up at www.letsride.co.uk or just come along on the day.

All you need is a roadworthy bike, and if you're not even sure of that, volunteers will be on site to check it's safe to ride before you set off.

Organisers also recommended that you carry a pump and a spare inner tube or puncture repair kit just in case.

Becky added: "The Richard Jefferies museum are kindly hosting us as part of their Culture and Cream Teas Sunday open afternoon.

"There will be delicious cream teas, live country and blues music and lots of free activities for all the family to get involved in.

"So even if you don’t fancy getting out on your bike there will be plenty on to keep you entertained."

Organisers are encouraging participants to make their way to the start point, at the museum, by bike.

There is no parking available on the day although there is a car park available at the nearby Coate Water Country Park for a small charge.
