RESURFACING work will start on the A419 near Swindon tonight.

The major maintenance scheme will involve resurfacing the southbound and northbound sections by working throughout the night on different parts of the road for just over three weeks.

The southbound section between the Lady Lane and A420 junctions will be closed tonight, for one night, from 8pm to 6am.

Then the northbound section from the Commonhead roundabout to the A420 will be closed overnight from August 30 to September 6 and the northbound section from the A420 to the Turnpike roundabout will be closed between September 7 and 21.

The northbound section between Commonhead and the A420 will also be closed for resurfacing work for the entire weekend of September 9 and 10, from 8pm on Friday September 8 to to 6am on Monday September 11.

The road passes through Stratton, Blunsdon and Covingham.

Joe Tray, who chairs Stratton Saint Margaret Parish Council, said: "This will cause an influx of traffic through the small streets of Stratton, which is a concern.

"However, we understand that the work is vital and needs to be carried out.

"I am concerned about the impact this will have on residents but closing the road overnight to minimise disruption is sensible .

"Let's hope it's done by the deadline that's been set."

Ian Jankinson, chairman of Blunsdon Parish Council, said: "The turnpike can be a bit of a nightmare, especially with the growth of properties in the area which causes quite a constriction, but we shouldn't suffer too many problems."

A spokesman for Highways England, who are carrying out the works, said: “Clearly signposted diversion routes will be in place during the work, and Highways England advises motorists to allow extra time and plan their journeys.
