URGENT maintenance work at the Oasis Leisure Centre will begin next month.

The specifics of the repairs are still being drawn up but the the car park is expected be mended and the much-neglected skate park next to the centre will soon be given a new lease of life.

The Oasis’ new owners, Seven Capital, pledged to make the repairs after taking over development of the troubled North Star development earlier this year.

Swindon Borough Council announced a deal worth £270m with the developers in July for them to manage the construction of the massive multi-million-pound entertainment complex.

The North Star project suffered years of delays and false starts amid a troubled partnership with the council’s previous development partner, Moirai, which brought the scheme to the brink of collapse.

Seven Central has experience with completing complicated large-scale development projects so it is hoped it will be smooth sailing from now on.

A ski centre with two indoor ski slopes and real snow cannons, an IMAX cinema, a bowling alley, a hotel, and several bars and restaurants are all in the pipeline for the new leisure destination.

Operators are said to be lined up ready to deliver on each of the aspects of the ambitious scheme, which is expected to launch by 2021 and will create hundreds of jobs.

It is hoped that the expensive regeneration will boost the town’s economy by attracting visitors from all over the country and become a hotspot for tourists and locals alike.

A spokesperson for Seven Capital said: “A specification of works is currently being prepared and tendered for the Oasis.

“This has to be agreed and programmed with the operator to minimise disruption.

“We expect works to start in the autumn.

“Detailed design has started for the new ski leisure complex, and legal agreements are being progressed with the anchor tenants.

“We expect to complete the application for outline planning consent before Christmas.”
