SWINDONIANS are being reminded to plan ahead during today’s half marathon which will see multiple roads close to traffic.

With the race starting at 11am from the County Ground, organisers have endeavoured to minimise disruption while runners tackle the 13.1 mile course taking them past local landmarks including the Magic Roundabout, the Oasis, the railway, the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet as well as Old Town before a downhill finish into the town centre, where crowds will be cheering on runners over the finishing line under the big screen in Wharf Green.

As the race has a split start finish, this will mean that rather than closing off the whole route at the same time, the roads will only be closed in the direction of the runners, so passage by car in the opposite direction is possible.

The route map shows how the race has been split into 16 sections and each will only be closed for part of the race(timings shown).

The road closures come into force one hour before the first runner, and one hour after the last runner has crossed the end of the section.

Roads that will be closed for part of the day include

Shrivenham Road

• Magic Roundabout

• Queen’s Drive

• Coate roundabout

• Dorcan Way

• Swindon Road

• Bridge End Road

• Cirencester Way

• Great Western Way

• Polaris Way

• North Star Avenue

• Newcombe Drive

• Bruce Street Bridges

• Kemble Drive

• Penzance Drive

Wootton Bassett Road

• Redpost Drive

• Peglars Way

• Foxham Way

• Black Horse Way

• Pipers Way

• Marlborough Road

• Wood Street

• Victoria Road

• Regents Circus

• Commercial Road

• Wharf Green.

Across the route there will be manned crossings by security and police officers to allow vehicles to pass when possible but organisers have asked motorists to be patient while the race is on.

Some bus services with Thamesdown Transport as well as Stagecoach will be affected by the closures so passengers have been warned by the operators to check online before travelling.

Crowds wanting to watch the race can do so from a number of vantage points throughout the route and it is expected that hundreds will meet runners at the finishing line in Wharf Green.

People wanting to make sure they bag a good viewing spot can park at a number of town centre car parks including Brunel North, Fleming Way, Britannia Place, The Parade, Cheltenham Street and Spring Gardens.

And if you are going to watch, you might want to bring a brolly - light rain is forecast for Swindon on Sunday morning and into the afternoon, and temperatures are expected to hover around a cool 14C. Those conditions may suit the runners though.

People taking part can drop off their bags at the County Ground between 8am and 10am which they will be able to pick up at the finishing line.
