POLICE have been forced to close the investigation into a blaze that tore through South Marston Hotel.

They want to hear from anyone with information that could help them catch those behind the July fire.

Firefighters were called to the derelict South Marston Hotel just after 9pm on July 28. Crews from seven fire stations across the county were called to fight the blaze in an operation that lasted several days.

Officers from Wiltshire Police believe that the fire was started deliberately, but so far officers have been unable to find how out who started the fire or why.

Thorough enquiries have been carried out by fire investigation officers and police – but all leads have been exhausted.

They have said that the police investigation may be reopened if new information is offered by members of the public that could help them find the culprits.

A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Police said: “We have carried out an extensive investigation, but unfortunately there are no witnesses, no CCTV footage and all enquiries have been exhausted.

“It is believed the fire was started deliberately, but the investigation has now been closed as undetected.

“We will of course reopen the case should any further lines of enquiry come to light.”

South Marston Hotel had been closed for a year when it was gutted by fire. The former country club was closed in July 2016 – leaving 45 members of staff without jobs.

Smoke from the fire was so thick that nearby residents were told to keep their windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from seeping into their homes.

Earlier that week firefighters responded to reports that the building was alight. However, when they arrived on scene they discovered a controlled fire started by contractors working at the site.
