THE work of a popular British children’s author was brought to life yesterday as pupils at Even Swindon Primary School celebrated all things Roald Dahl.

Dressed as characters from some of their favourite books, the youngsters immersed themselves in the magical world of Willy Wonka and the BFG.

It was all done to mark National Roald Dahl Day – a celebration of the author’s birthday each year on September 13, during which schools all over the country pay tribute to the literary giant.

Even Swindon teacher and keen Roald Dahl fan Sarah Fitzgerald said: “We celebrated Roald Dahl Day as it is a great opportunity to look at the life, writing and stories of a great author.

“Staff and children from Year One to Year Six came to school dressed up as Roald Dahl characters.

“Matilda, Sophie, the BFG, Willy Wonka, a Golden Ticket, Charlie Bucket, oompa-loompas and Enormous Crocodiles were just some of the costumes.”

The school’s Year Six librarians also read Dahl stories to the lower year groups and there was a trail around school featuring some of Dahl’s invented words, a language known as Gobblefunk which includes swigpill (horrible food), svollop (to demolish) and gloriumptious (glorious and wonderful).
