DRIVERS are being reminded that Hay Lane will be closed overnight on Saturday as pat of the Junction 16 improvement works.

Contractor Hochtief UK Construction said they would be carrying out resurfacing works to the road overnight on Saturday as well as building in new drainage and gullies.

Major improvement work to ease access to Swindon and North Wiltshire, reduce congestion at junction 16 and reduce queuing on the M4, which we are carrying out on behalf of Swindon Borough Council, is progressing well. As part of the project we will be widening Hay Lane and require a night-time closure to safely carry out the following work:

The road will be closed between 8pm on Saturday and 6am the following morning from Spittleborough Roundabout to the junction with Wharf Road. Access to properties will be maintained and will be from the Wharf Road end of the closure.

While the road is closed, through-traffic will use a signed diversion route. Cars and other light vehicles will be sent along Great Western Way to the Mannington Roundabout and along Wootton Bassett Road before being sent along Redpost Drive and Peglars Way before joining Mill Lane and Wharf Road.

Larger vehicles unable to pass beneath the railway bridge on Wootton Bassett Road will be sent around Great Western Way to the Transfer Bridges, along County Road to the Magic Roundabout and then up Drove Road and Cricklade Street to Old Town where they will then be sent along Bath Road and down Kingshill to Wootton Bassett Road where they will rejoin the main diversionary route at Redpost Drive.

A Hochtief spokesman said: "Additional overnight closures will be needed to carry out surfacing at Hay Lane and the M4 eastbound exit slip road. These are currently expected to take place during the weeks commencing September 25 and October 2, and, once these dates are confirmed, advance warning signs will be in place to advise you of specific dates.

"We recognise that the nature of construction work can often be disruptive and that some disturbance is unavoidable, but trust you will appreciate the benefits of the works once complete. Where possible we encourage you to check before you travel and allow a little extra time for your journeys.
