A BRAND new hotel has opened its doors at the site of one of the first hotels in the heart of the town.

The Thistle Express, located on the corner of Islington Street and Fleming Way, welcomed guests, stakeholders and local dignitaries to a special opening ceremony this afternoon.

The Swindon Thistle Express is only the second in the country and is aimed at “the savvy, value-conscious, modern traveller”.

General manager James Preece said: “I am very proud to be opening the hotel today. My team and I have worked very hard since July and it’s a pleasure to be able to welcome guests.

“We have done a lot of research about what guests actually want, which is a no nonsense, no fuss experience. We see it as being a three star hotel with four star service.”

The 95 bedroom hotel, just a short walk from the train station, offers guests free Wi-Fi and smart TVs in every room.

Other features include blackout curtains, Hypnos mattresses (allegedly used by the Queen) and a free buffet breakfast.

Councillor Garry Perkins, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “It’s great that after four and a half years we have a hotel back in operation.

“There always has been a shortage of good beds in Swindon and I’m sure this place will be extremely popular.

“I am very pleased to see it and it’s all part of the regeneration that’s taking place all over the town.”

Speaking about some of the hotel’s unique features, James said: “The smart TVs in every room mean guests will be able to stream and download content straight to the television.

“Feedback has been great so far with a lot of people saying it’s good value for money.”

Neil Gallagher, CEO of parent company glh hotels, said he was especially proud to be bringing the new Thistle Express brand to Swindon.

He said: “We have a great product at a great price to compliment the excellent service.”
