A man who tried to rob a pub goer at knifepoint while on bail for a similar incident has been spared jail.

Conway Sims was due to face sentence in Wales just days after he tried to mug a drinker in Old Town while armed with a three inch blade.

In March, after hearing the 22-year-old got a suspended sentence for the other matter, a judge decided to put off passing sentence to see if he could stay out of trouble.

He told him he must not reoffend, look for work or a college course, and comply with the conditions of his current community orders to avoid up to five years behind bars.

But despite him having done little of the order imposed at Cardiff and not got a job or a guaranteed college place Judge Robert Pawson has given him a 'last chance'.

He heard that Sims had done just five of the 40 hours of unpaid work and completed one of the 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days ordered by the court in October.

The judge was also told he had been deemed unsuitable for the thinking skills course, though had been doing well on one-to-one work with probation.

And though Sims, who also uses the surname Gayle, had made inquiries about starting a bricklaying course he had not been formally accepted on it.

The judge told him "I understand probation will speak to Swindon College and in part they are waiting on what happens today.

"Probation say it is a monumental step for you to get training and employment. The only way to reduce the risk of you reoffending is if you continue to engage with probation.

"If you come back here in the course of the next 24 months for any criminal offence you will be brought back here and you will be liable to go to prison. You understand: it is your last chance."

Noting the amount of the previous order which had not been completed he pointed out that the probation service had not said he breached it.

He imposed a two year jail term suspended for two years with a four month curfew and 30 days of rehabilitation activity requirement.

Sims targeted a man as he walked along Bath Road at about 11.30pm on the evening of Saturday October 22 on the way home from The Roaring Donkey.

The defendant and a mate approached the victim and demanded 'Give me your phone' as he threatened him with the knife.

The victim started to back off as the knife was stabbed in his direction but the second man was behind him.

Sims started shouting louder and louder and as the victim refused to hand over his phone he threaten him with 'mates in London'.

A third man then appeared and punched the victim hard to the face, leaving him with a cut mouth, and the trio ran off as other people appeared nearby.

When police arrived the victim pointed out his attacker and when he was arrested he still had the knife as well as a sat nav taken from a car in nearby Quarry Road.

Sims, formerly of Culvery Court, but now living in The Foyer on Bath Road, admitted attempted robbery, possessing a bladed article and handling stolen goods.

Emma Handslip, defending, said that there had been a great change in who he was associating with.

An earlier hearing was told he has post traumatic stress disorder and went off the rails when his brother died from an overdose.
