Charity runners raised more than £12,000 for cancer care in this year's Swindon Half Marathon.

The cash will go to Brighter Futures, the charity raising £2.9m for a new radiotherapy unit at the Great Western Hospital.

Brighter Futures was the biggest single recipient of funds raised by Swindon Half Marathon runners.

Officially, 32 runners represented the charity in the race. A dozen more are thought to have run for Brighter Futures on the day.

Catherine Newman, head of fundraising at Great Western Hospital, said: "The event is very challenging and we are so proud of the community’s immense support for Brighter Futures.

“We were a bit of sunshine on that wet, miserable day, and it was wonderful to see so many faces light up when they saw us.

“It is amazing to know that we were the local charity of choice for so many people.”

Staff from Brighter Futures were joined at the 13-mile marathon's halfway mark by percussion band Ministry of Samba. The group helped bring smiles to the faces of rain-lashed runners.

Half marathon organisers have donated 950 water bottles, 14kg of jelly babies and 1,000 energy gels to Brighter Futures for use at the charity's upcoming challenge events.

On Saturday, dozens of cyclists will line up at the hospital to take part in the Ride for Radiotherapy - racing up to 70 miles across the Wiltshire countryside.
