A 32-YEAR-OLD man has been sent back to prison for offending while on licence.

Jason Smith, of Plymouth Street, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft when he faced magistrates on Monday.

Outlining the case, prosecutor Keith Ballinger told the court how, on September 10, Smith stole from the McDonald’s in Great Western Way before stealing £77 worth of alcohol from the Co-op in Highworth three days later.

Speaking of the McDonald’s theft, Mr Ballinger said: “CCTV footage shows the defendant leaning in through the window of the drive-thru and taking a handful of coins.”

The court heard that, three days later, Smith was spotted by Co-op staff pushing a trolley around the store and putting bottles of alcohol into a bag.

When confronted, Smith ran off without paying for the bottles.

He was last before the court in April when he received a custodial sentence for driving offences.

His defence said that Smith had suffered from depression for the past 10 years and currently slept on the sofa at home.

Magistrates returned him to prison and extended his sentence by four weeks.

He was also ordered to pay £77.98 compensation for the stolen bottles of alcohol.
