WEST Mercia Police are investigating allegations of an assault during Swindon Wildcats' match at Telford Tigers last Sunday, after which forward Toms Rutkis was left requiring surgery.

The Link Centre youngster needed an operation on Monday for a jaw injury following the injury sustained during the Wildcats NIHL Cup match in the Midlands.

The match at Telford is currently being reviewed by the league, with Telford's Jonathan Weaver placed on suspension pending the outcome of an investigation, while Swindon's Luc Johnson also received a one-match ban for high-sticking.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "West Mercia Police is investigating an alleged assault that happened during a game at Telford Ice Rink on Sunday, September 24.

"Investigations are in the very early stages and officers are still in the process of speaking with witnesses and the parties involved.

"No arrests have been made at this stage but anyone with information is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident number 805s of 24 September."

A statement from the league said: "In Sunday’s National Cup match between Telford Tigers and Swindon Wildcats, Swindon’s Luc Johnson received a Match penalty for high sticking. He is suspended for one game and has five penalty points added to his record.

"A second incident from this game is currently under review and further details will be published as soon as this is concluded."

Swindon won the match in Shropshire 4-1 to complete a four-point weekend after beating Basingstoke Bison 5-3 the previous night.
